A Strategy for Generating Customer Loyalty

While easier said than done, the key to retaining customers is delivering a consistent experience throughout their purchasing journey. The modern retailer can’t afford to claim that they’re in the dark when it comes to understanding what today’s consumers care about — i.e., an experience that’s built for the individual with access of the mass-market. The wealth of research and data available to retailers tells us that customers value a personal touch, which needs to include the following:

great customer service in-store with the help of intelligent sales associates;

efficiency when purchasing with little or no wait times at checkout;

accuracy of product information that’s available at their fingertips;

personalized offers; and

availability of goods with proper and connected inventory management.

In the past, we saw e-commerce dominate in these areas, pushing customers away from the in-store experience that requires a higher level of touch and decision making. And yet, each of these factors can be brought into a store using solutions and technologies that are available today.

Customer experience is key to retaining their loyalty. Figures from Capgemini’s Digital Transformation Institute show that two in three consumers see long lines at checkout counters as their main frustration, and 48 percent of brands were found to have a significant disconnect between consumers and retailers.

Retailers which have introduced solutions and technology that have addressed these issues have seen an improvement in customer satisfaction levels. By allowing customers to scan products for checkout using their mobile devices, letting associates use tablets/mobile phones to provide better information to consumers, checking stock availability before visiting, same-day delivery of products, and in-store personalized alerts, retailers can deliver increased engagement with customers. That added layer of satisfaction can match the efficiency of e-commerce. By focusing on operations that enable an enhanced shopping experience, retailers can build better connections with customers, creating repeat visits over and over again.

The DNA behind a business that can succeed in today’s environment includes a retailer that’s strongly integrating initiatives such as mobile payments and inventory management across all its channels. In addition, it’s critical that retailers train their sales associates to use in-store digital technology. This keeps them engaged and better equipped to enhance customers’ experiences. Furthermore, it enables associates to provide feedback and help deliver constant improvements to the in-store experience.

Take this blueprint and you can design a successful environment for a retail store. In today’s ecosystem, loyalty comes by showing how much you value the customer. Retailers that strive to improve customer satisfaction will continue to succeed. There’s no shortage of solutions to help improve the infrastructure for the right experience for each individual.

Elk Grove Firm Stays Flexible to Changing Mobile Technology

Andrew Graham, founder and president of Infinite Peripherals in Elk Grove Village, shows an inventory scanner.
photos by Joe Lewnard | Staff Photographer

Today, the 80-employee company develops and sells printers, bar code and credit card scanners, and other devices that connect to Apple iPhones, iPads, iPods and other mobile devices for the retail, logistics, delivery and medical industries, as well as small businesses. IPC's portfolio accounts for more than $50 million in annual sales, according to Graham, IPC's founder and president.

While there are other, much bigger companies that sell mobile point-of-sale devices, printers, inventory scanners and other peripherals, IPC's products are built to connect and adapt to consumer devices like the iPhone, which Graham says makes them a more cost-effective alternative to a business owner.

"We're adapting Apple for enterprise use," he said. "If you can adapt a consumer Apple device to an enterprise, then the enterprise gets the advantage of the constantly changing technology, and they are already used to the interface.

"There's no technology learning curve for employees," he added. "It's likely the same device they use at home."

And adaptability is critical when working with a technology that is constantly in flux. The mobile industry has changed exponentially from the days of the Palm. Graham said the company has developed a wealth of knowledge over the 16-plus years creating products for devices ranging from the Palm, to Windows Mobile and Blackberry, to the current Apple iOS and Android mobile platforms.

When Apple unveiled the iPod -- and later the iPhone -- things really turned for IPC, Graham noted.

"The iPhone is a computer shoved into a phone," he said. "That opened the door for us. We took our expertise in connecting into other PDAs and moved it into the iPod universe, and all of a sudden, with the affordability of iPods and iPhones, got a lot of big enterprise interest."

Graham notes that while they do provide printers and scanners that work with Android and Windows devices, their focus has been on adapting to Apple's mobile portfolio. The affordable price of iPods, iPhones and iPad tablets, coupled with IPC's peripherals, has made the devices a more cost-effective alternative to the larger companies' offerings, especially for small businesses, he said.

IPC's portfolio still includes stand-alone and in-device printers, point-of-sale and scanning devices and accessories. It's newest product, the DPP-255 mobile printer, is a high-speed receipt printer that will work with any mobile device. Graham notes the new printer is faster than previous versions and, with a 2-inch width, can also print labels.

With it's hardware product line firmed up, Graham said the company is beginning to step into the software market, which will make IPC a full-service solutions provider.

"We have a lot of accumulated knowledge over the past 16 years about what software implementations work and what don't," he said. "It's a complete solution where we can come in and say 'Let us take a crack at helping you design your software, or let us design it or be consultants on what's the best practice.'"

Asking the Big Questions for Your Business

Mediaplanet: Can you describe what enterprise technology means to you?

Dung Lam: Enterprise technology means any technology that is used company-wide to enable the company to do business. Whether this is to improve a process, augment a workflow or facilitate visibility, enterprise technologies all impact the business in one valuable way or the other.

MP: What are some tools or software that you use regularly to manage innovation for your company or product?

DL: Innovation within our organization occurs in a number of different ways. Innovation can be organic, collective through discussion and debate or based on customer feedback and gaps we see in the market. A lot of this collaboration happens through multiple, different forms of communication. Therefore, any tool that enables us to communicate more effectively and efficiently helps us innovate. Some of the applications we use include WebEx, GlobalMeet, Oovoo, Scrum, Salesforce.com and Dropbox.

MP: What questions should a company be asking themselves before seeking out new technologies to fulfill selective IT solutions?

DL: Companies should ask themselves several questions before they seek out a new technology to solve their challenges. First, what is driving the need to look for a solution? Is the need impacting business, and does the company have the most effective resources to solve that problem?

If there is a real business need, a company must start building the requirements so that the solution addresses a set of defined parameters instead of a moving target. Once the foundation of a business-impacting need is defined, along with its requirements, the company then can start its evaluation process of vendors and solutions.

MP: Can you describe a situation when you have seen first-hand the impact that innovative technology can have on a firm?

DL: I’ve seen many innovative technologies be quite impactful to organizations of all sizes. We helped changed the way a nonprofit organization tracked and distributed resources and food to local villagers. With technology, what once took 20 people and two weeks was reduced to five people and no more than three days.

IPC also transformed the way one airline provided customer service. Passengers formerly were known as a seat number, but with mobile technology, flight attendants now can address passengers by name, understand their airline status, provide upgrades on the fly and offer travelers their favorite beverage every time they fly.

MP: What is an emerging industry initiative or trend that really excites you? One that frightens you?

DL: The emergence of wearable technologies excites me. As technology and manufacturing improves, products will get smaller and closer to the user. We used to use a computer at work, then brought it home when it mobilized with laptops. With smartphones, we have computers in our hands and now with smart watches, we have capabilities on our wrists 24/7.

Data security keeps everyone up at night. Technology that is smaller and closer to the user enables opportunists to find ways to access that data, which is typically more personal and inflicts more anxiety when lost.

Retailers beware: Mobile drives holiday shopping season

Here’s a glimpse of what retailers experienced during the recent five-day span:

The NRF 2015 Thanksgiving Weekend Survey found that 56.7 percent of smartphone owners used their device to research products, make purchases, check in-store availability of items, and to conduct other mobile shopping activities. Some 57.7 percent of tablet owners used their device to search for holiday deals and make purchases.

Adobe said that mobile devices accounted for 49 percent of online shopping visits on Cyber Monday, but reported fewer actual purchases from those devices. Smartphones accounted for $313 million in purchases on Cyber Monday. Consumers purchased $205 million via iPhones and $107 million via Android. The large discrepancy between the platforms supports the argument that Apple users are more affluent consumers.

Adobe estimates that consumers spent more than $11 billion in online sales for the five-day period. That’s an increase of 15 percent from 2014.

IBM said that while online sales slowed on Cyber Monday because consumers started shopping over the weekend, smartphones accounted for 15 percent of Monday's purchases. Adobe said that retailers sold a little over $3 billion in goods on Cyber Monday.

What does this all mean?

The mobile shopper's rise to prominence puts retailers under pressure to provide a purchasing experience that comes across as intuitive to consumers using smartphones and tablets. Executives who spoke at the recent Money 20/20 conference in Las Vegas hammered this point home across many panel discussions. The message was this: If you don't have a coherent mobile strategy in place right now, you might as well close up shop today.

Consumers who browse for deals on their mobile devices don’t necessarily purchase them from a smartphone or tablet. Retailers still have an opportunity to lure consumers into their physical locations. But that's a double-edged sword because showrooming is alive and well with consumers despite some retailers' willingness to price match on the spot. Consumers love to comparison shop on the go. Most won't think twice about making a two-minute walk across the street to save $5 at a different store.

Adobe predicts that shoppers will spend almost $1 billion per day online until Christmas. Retailers still have time to tweak their mobile strategies.

The consumer's shopping experience now more than ever starts on a mobile device. Even if a consumer never intends to make a purchase from the device, they're using the mobile Web at least to comparison shop. The next step for retailers and payments providers is to make the mobile checkout process easier. We could see even greater gains next year in mobile purchases as a result.

Field Technologies Online

Magazine Article | 26th October 2015

by Brian Albright

In the field service, direct store delivery, and package/parcel delivery markets, those peripherals can include receipt printers, card readers, holsters or cases, chargers, laser range finders, mobile printers, RFID readers, device docks, vehicle power units, voice-enabled headsets, and DEX cables. As interest in using multipurpose mobile devices has increased among consumers and businesses, interest in peripherals has followed. According to a report from TechNavio, Global Accessories and Peripherals Market for Smartphones and Tablets 2014-2018, the peripherals space is expected to have a compound annual growth rate of 9.1 percent for smartphones and a whopping 39.9 percent for tablets.

“Peripherals provide mobile workers the ability to perform all aspects of their workflow remotely just as effectively as if they were working on-site in the home office,” says Bruce Stubbs, director of industry marketing at Honeywell Sensing & Productivity Solutions. Holsters and cases enhance ergonomics while protecting the devices from damage in or out of the vehicle. Chargers and vehicle power units allow maximum performance for an entire shift of operations without the need to interrupt work to charge the device. Card readers and mobile printers provide fast and easy customer-focused activity as well as faster real-time AP/AR processing for the company. Proper cables and connectivity allow better communication with host systems to provide customer information and dynamic routing capabilities, while voice headsets can be used to provide a safer, more productive, more accurate, and focused work process.

Peripherals Provide Enterprise-Grade Functionality

In deployments where consumer-style tablets or phones are being utilized, peripherals are essential for providing enterprise-grade functionality. In those deployments, rugged cases, sleds, scanners, credit card readers, and other peripherals are the only way to provide all of the features needed for the application. The emergence of lower-cost peripherals with more features has helped make these consumer- grade device deployments possible for line-of-business solutions.

“Specialized hardware enables high-performance bar code scanning,” says Dung Lam, director of enterprise sales at Infinite Peripherals. “Mag-stripe reading and payment capabilities that smart devices don’t have the capability to perform on their own or perform at a high volume with good quality are enabled with peripherals.”

Selecting the right peripherals can mean the difference between a successful or a failed deployment. Peripherals can also affect worker efficiency. “Providing mobile field workers with peripherals that enable them to use their usual mobile device ensures less training and better productivity,” says Cary Kiest, innovation director at Trimble Mobile Computing Solutions. “It also reduces the investment needed in special hardware and reduces the number of devices mobile field workers need to carry.”

OS Guides Peripheral Selection

As more consumer devices are used in field service, delivery, and other types of enterprise applications, the mix of peripherals has also continued to change. “The size, screen capabilities, keypads, functionality, etc., can vary by industry or vertical as they can be developed to support specific workflow needs,” Stubbs says. “But there are also devices that are flexible enough in design to be used across industries or verticals.”

Depending on the industry, vertical market, or job function, varying types of peripherals may be paired with various types of mobile devices. “It all starts with the OS platform,” Lam says. “Typically a company chooses iOS or Android, and we find that the enterprise leans more toward iOS. Next, companies evaluate the workflow and investigate which form factor will best fit. Depending on the job, the tasks, and the environment, a company can select a device as small as an iPod to as big as an iPad Air.”

From there, companies have to find peripherals that meet their application needs, are rugged enough to match the durability of the mobile device, and are compatible with the mobile platform. Durability is a key consideration; a flimsy mobile printer, cable, or scanner can bring productivity to a halt, even if technicians are armed with highly durable computers. The flexibility of the mobile platform is also important. If a rugged computer is in place for three to five years, companies need to ensure that its connectivity options can accommodate future peripherals.

“The use of peripherals continues to evolve,” Lam says. “As new devices are released and more innovative solutions are created to solve problems, new peripherals will be required to cater to those customized workflows. The great thing about peripherals is that the possibilities are endless. With the right application and hardware, companies can change the way they work and continue to innovate in ways they never may have thought possible.”

According to VDC Research, the use of tablets is driving growth in enterprise applications, and peripherals and accessories will expand their presence in tandem. Enterprise tablets are expected to grow 12.1 percent annually through 2019, but their adoption can be described as “a marriage of compromises.” According to research published in September 2015 (VDC’s 2015 Enterprise and Government Tablet Analysis), “Therefore, for many enterprise line of business applications, of equal importance [are] the accessory and peripheral ecosystems developed by tablet OEMs and their partners.”

The Most Popular Peripherals

Leading the way in accessory requirements are protective cases, payment and scanning sleds, multibay charging docks, and vehicle mounts. VDC also highlighted the need for cable-less solutions, such as Bluetooth-enabled wireless peripherals, to eliminate common points of failure created by easily damaged cable connections.

“Providing mobile field workers with peripherals that enable them to use their usual mobile device ensures less training and better productivity.”

Cary Kiest, Trimble Mobile Computing Solutions

Companies should focus on peripherals that provide wireless connectivity (where appropriate), availability (can the accessory be purchased in sufficient numbers?), and flexibility. If you buy a vehicle mount for a tablet, for example, odds are you’ll replace the tablet before you replace the vehicle. Will that mount support future iterations of the tablet? Can other devices be docked there as well? If a company deploys multiple types of mobile devices, could a single mobile printer support all of them? The ability to mix and match solutions can have a big impact on up-front costs.

Advancements in mobile application software will lead to additional peripheral capabilities, according to Stubbs. “The evolution will actually occur with enhancements in the software and systems that drive the ability of the field worker to be more productive and connected,” Stubbs says. “Hence, the peripherals used to keep the field worker connected, charged, and efficient will continue to play a key role in the execution of the job functions. One area of growth we see is the increased use of voice technology outside the typical in- premise workflows. Taking advantage of the focused, hands-free nature of this technology in the field can assist with tasks that are very hands-on, providing even greater levels of accuracy, productivity, and customer satisfaction.”

According to Kiest, the Internet of Things will disrupt the peripherals space (along with all other technology markets), providing accelerated adoption, optimization, and expanded capabilities for controlling and communicating with future peripherals. “We’ll see a continuation of the rapid investment into providing new solutions to customers that will manage the collection and analytical digestion of the data,” Kiest says. “The microsizing of electronics in size and power will allow for a faster adoption to new solutions and services. A good example is the rapid onslaught of new innovations looking for sponsorship on sites such as Kickstarter.”

For companies that have invested in enterprise mobility, a vibrant peripherals ecosystem can help add flexibility and expandability to a mobile platform. In deployments where certain functions may only be required by certain end user segments, the ability to add or subtract peripherals can help companies maintain platform consistency while still enabling them to customize the hardware. Selecting mobile hardware that supports a wide variety of peripherals and then choosing peripherals that are built to last in an enterprise environment can extend the scope and the life cycle of the mobility solution while keeping a lid on costs.

PowerPad 15

Tablets and other mobile devices are seeing a rapid uptake across the board in all different types of establishments. For example, schools are headed towards a 1:1 deployment of tablets, restaurants are using them instead of menus, hospitals are using them to update patient records, and hotels are offering them in reception instead of newspapers, retailers are deploying them as sales tools and defence companies are developing more and more portable tech each day!

The increased use of mobile devices has created the problem of how to keep them all charged and synchronised with the same data. Using the PP15S, you are able to simultaneously manage up to 15 devices. Through ChaSync, our free app, you are able to simultaneously charge and sync the devices rather than having to choose and switch between charging mode and sync mode. This minimises the complexity of operation while reducing the time which the device has to be attached to the cable. ChaSync also works with older tablets such as the iPad 1/2.

The PP15S unit incorporates a future proof design, when your current mobile devices are upgraded or new ones purchased, they will still function normally when plugged in. This is managed through firmware updates which are available through our free updater app available at cambrionix.com.

The PP15S also supports our LiveView app which allows you to control and monitor the PP15S remotely. Monitor parameters such as port status, power consumption, current, voltage, time on charge, security and temperature.

Applications:

Retail fixtures where tablet devices are used as an integral part of the sales & marketing process (for example: digital advertising, in-store entertainment, information kiosks or simply charging your display devices).

Charge & sync cart/case designers who wish to enter this rapidly expanding market with a pre-certified, class-leading product.

Defence, security and wearable camera companies who wish to offer a large scale charging and data transfer product to complement their existing technology.

Mobile device OEMs who require a fully configurable, controllable, scriptable appliance to assist with large scale device testing.
The P15S is also available in an 8 port variant, the PP8S, perfect for smaller deployments!

Infinite Peripherals® Launches ScanBoard Application for iOS

ELK GROVE VILLAGE, Ill. – June 2, 2015 –

Infinite Peripherals, Inc. (IPC), a leading provider of enterprise mobility devices, has developed an iOS application that enables basic scanning into other iOS applications using a keyboard extension. ScanBoard is a keyboard emulator from Infinite Peripherals that allows any iOS application to receive barcodes from Infinite Peripherals scanners, including the popular Linea Pro® and Infinea Tab® product lines. Scanned barcodes will populate the active application’s text field via keystroke emulation, and the app is proven to work within multiple iOS applications including Excel®, Google™ Sheets, Safari®, FileMaker® and Notes. Requiring iOS 8.2 or later and available for free on the Apple App Store℠, ScanBoard is an ideal keyboard wedge solution for the Linea Pro and Infinea Tab products.

Users simply install the ScanBoard app, add the keyboard to the iOS keyboard list, open any iOS app that has an active text field, choose the ScanBoard keyboard and begin scanning. By combining ScanBoard with a Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) application, barcodes also can be forwarded wirelessly to a remote PC or Macintosh® computer.

“Combining IPScanBoard and RDP provides the opportunity to keep existing systems in place, so that anyone can benefit from the scanning capabilities of our devices without having to develop custom applications,” said IPC CEO Jeffrey Scott. IPC’s lightweight, durable Linea Pro adds a barcode scanner, capable of reading 1D or 2D barcodes, and a magnetic stripe reader to the iPod touch® and iPhone®. The Infinea Tab and Infinea Tab M add the barcode scanner and magnetic stripe reader to the iPad®, iPad mini℠ or iPad Air®. This combination facilitates multiple mobile enterprise functions, including inventory management, point-of-sale, healthcare data access and labeling, ticketing and entry access, lead tracking, inspection/work flow, dispatch and time/labor.

IPC provides software development resources and tools so customers can program scanner and reader functions into their own application.

Infinea Tab M for iphone 6 plus - United Airlines

Challenge

United Airlines and United Express operate an average of nearly 5,000 flights a day to 362 airports across six continents. On board, their flight attendants had been using a mobility device with limited functionality: it could accept payments, but it could not perform other important functions like viewing the seating chart and checking flight delays. The device’s inability to adapt to other needs meant lost opportunities for increased efficiency and elevated customer service.

In a push to upgrade its mobility operations at the end of 2014, United provided Apple® iPhone® 6 Plus devices to its 22,000 flight attendants. Once equipped with the iPhone 6 Plus, United contacted several companies seeking a mobile point-of-sale (mPOS) device compatible with the iPhone 6 Plus. Unfortunately, there were very few commercial adaptations for the new 6 Plus available in the market that met United’s needs.

Solution

As the leader in enterprise mobility solutions, Infinite Peripherals (IPC) was ready with a powerful commercial adaptation for the iPhone 6 Plus: the Infinea Tab M. IPC was also the only company that could provide a fully PCI-SRED certified mag-stripe version within United’s accelerated timeline.

United already had an application ready to go that performed transactions and other airline specific functions. However, United deferred to IPC’s software expertise and asked them to create an additional custom application to ensure extra credit card security for protecting customer information.

IP completed the tailor-made United solution with a sleek custom case featuring their brand colors and identity, with a strategically placed ergonomic hand strap for ease and comfort. In all, Infinite Peripherals responded quickly and accurately to United’s desire for a mutually better experience for their employees and their customers.
